In 1957, Oskar Fritz Schuh tried to convince the board of the Salzburg Festival to organise a Street Theatre. In contrast to the Salzburg Festival, the Salzburg Cultural Association immediately was enthused by this idea and didn’t hesitate to start with its implementation. Both, Schuh and his wife have shaped the theatre in a quite idealistic way for more then 15 years. Nowadays it’s almost impossible to imagine the streets of Salzburg without a Street Theatre during the summer month. In 1985 Klaus Gmeiner was appointed artistic director and Bernd Dieter Müller took over the position of the stage and costume designer. From 1970 to 2004 the Salzburg Street Theatre has organized more then 900 performances and has welcomed about 500.000 visitors.
No matter where the theatre hosts, locals, tourists, admirers and skeptics share a common experience and stand shoulder to shoulder with each other. The performances of the Salzburg Street Theatre are free of admission and are supposed to attract people from all walks of life – it is for everyone and its mission is to entertain and to give pleasure - it should make us think and maybe it can serve as an opportunity to familiarize with the world of the theatre...
