Bruckner is said to have dedicated his Ninth Symphony to "The Good Lord." This is not documented, although corresponding stories by friends were published during the composer's lifetime. What is certain is that the Master of St. Florian was a faithful man, rooted in the baroque Catholicism of his rural homeland. Of course, he was not free from superstition either. "I don't like to start the Ninth, I don't dare, because Beethoven also ended his life with the Ninth," he confided to friends after the completion of the Eighth. And he could indeed no longer complete the work, despite many sketches for the last movement. However, he often played the three finished movements himself on the piano and said: "The Adagio that appears inside is said to be the most beautiful one I have written. It always grips me when I play it". It is truly a miracle. The Miserere of the Mass in D Minor and the Benedictus of the Mass in F Minor are quotes of their own, elevated to gestures of longing, sinking again and again into darkness. Only in the last bars does redemption, peace in deep faith resound. Is a hymnal finale still possible afterwards? Bruckner's wish to play his "Te Deum" at the end is rarely followed, but this reference to the sharp contrast, to the C major jubilation of God's praise, was perhaps a last will to try something that had never been there before. In this concert with the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, not only Mozart, but also Bruckner, he will finally be obeyed once again. With the grandiose Bach Choir Salzburg and exquisite solos.
