Camille Saint-Saëns, France's great classicist romantic, is a musical ruler of the year in 2021, having died in 1921 at the age of 86. We celebrate him a little later with his most famous symphonic work. Those who expect it to be a concerto for organ and orchestra are mistaken, for the "queen of instruments" is here an orchestral instrument used selectively and selectively. As, by the way, is a piano, which must be played four-handed. The central motif of this impressive sound fantasy is the Dies irae. Before this, the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz under Michael Francis presents a piece of funeral music that is deeply moving precisely because of its neo-baroque clarity and sensitive melodicism - Maurice Ravel's sounding memorial to friends who fell in the First World War, "Le Tombeau de Couperin." So that the "Queen of Instruments", played by Christian Schmitt, can also shine as a solo instrument, Francis Poulenc's finely crafted organ concerto is added. Thus, the entire program becomes a bow to classical form and expression, creatively continued and revitalized by three greats of 19th and d 20th century French music.
