No, neither the popular "Second" nor the often played "Fifth" by Jean Sibelius is on the program, but his "First", a work full of youthful joy in tone colors, great climaxes and wonderfully blossoming melodicism. A fresh masterpiece, this "First" is already unmistakably Sibelius in its Finnish folk music-inspired motivic and magical tone poetry. Seoul Philharmonic, South Korea's leading orchestra, makes a guest appearance under the baton of a "native speaker" of Scandinavian music, Finnish maestro Osmo Vänskä, who has been chief conductor in Seoul since 2020. The orchestra has also brought music from its homeland, so to speak. Seoul-born Unsuk Chin, whose native language is actually Chin Un-Suk, lives in Berlin and is one of today's most successful composers. "Chin's synesthetic sense for color and flavor of music is phenomenal, as is her flair for shimmering climaxes, for instrumental surprises and virtuoso special interludes," said Wolfgang Schreiber in "Opernwelt." And Nicolas Altstaedt, one of the leading cellists of our time, can be experienced with the brilliant concerto of the British sound magician William Walton. An exciting concert with great music that you don't hear every day.
