Gustav Mahler's "First," the opening of one of the most important symphonic cycles in music history, is always a special listening experience. This time, the celebrated French maestro Alain Altinoglu and the brilliant hr-Sinfonieorchester devote themselves to this multi-layered journey of sound. The work, originally planned as a tone poem, begins with hopeful spring music, leads us to the wistful love pains of the "fahrende Gesellen," to archaic dance rhythms and to night-black images of nature in which the animals of the forest carry a hunter to his grave. In the glorious finale, the light of life finally triumphs over the abysses of night.
Before this, Francesco Piemontesi interprets one of the great romantic piano concertos, that of Robert Schumann, in which poetic creative power, symphonic form and pianistic brilliance become a stirring whole. Like Mahler, Schumann translated poetic images into sound.
