Johannes Brahms' violin concerto never fails to enchant with its emotional diversity, its clear beauty and its mastery of using the solo instrument within the framework of a grand symphonic narrative. Arabella Steinbacher, the celebrated violinist, is this time the narrator, as it were. It may be that there is a story to this, but Brahms did not reveal it and we are allowed to think up our own. His contemporary Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, on the other hand, meticulously explored the ancient fairy tales of the Orient and created an enduring symphonic monument to the princess Scheherazade, who saved herself by telling adventurous stories from a thousand and one life-threatening nights; this is a sounding novel, with an exciting, fantastic plot and unforgettable motifs. The world-renowned Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra is performed by its music director, the Finn Santtu-Matias Rouvali, one of the great conducting personalities of the younger generation.
