The title “From the New World” is inscribed in the New Year's Concert in a double meaning - Antonín Dvořák's eponymous, masterful 9th Symphony will be performed as well as works by composers from this very “new world”: Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. Bernstein's Overture from the two-act comedy Candide, in which the eponymous protagonist tries to trust in the doctrine of “the best of all possible worlds” on his journey around the world, opens the concert on New Year's Day in a lively manner. In the following Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, Gershwin combines elements of classical symphonic work with elements of jazz. Soloist on the piano is the Italian Fabio Martino. Dvořák's 9th Symphony was written during his three-year stay in America. Inspired by the spirit of indigenous melodies, Dvořák wrote themes that he developed with the means of modern rhythms, harmony, counterpoint and orchestral color, creating with the symphony "From the New World" not only one of the most performed orchestral works, but a true masterpiece.
