A symphony orchestra from Iceland? The orchestra from the island of ice and fire is making an international career. The young conductor and composer Daníel Bjarnason, already celebrated in Europe and the USA, also comes from Reykjavik. Music of the North is at the centre of his programmes in Salzburg. What could be more Nordic than the Norwegian Edvard Grieg's music to Ibsen's "Peer Gynt" - music that belongs to the most popular treasure of the romantic 19th century. Jean Sibelius can be experienced not only as a beguiling sound painter of Finnish forests and lakes, but also as a visionary of a modernity that remains true to beauty in his 5th Symphony. And in between, "our" master hornist Radovan Vlatković plays the third of the singular horn concertos of Wolfgang Amadé, who has never been to Scandinavia but composed music for the whole world.
