Armenia has remarkably ancient and fruitful musical traditions. In the West, however, only Aram Khachaturian is known, and only a few of his works. Only slowly does one get an idea of the riches this musical treasure trove holds. Their liturgical chants belong to the oldest written music in the world, their folk music is astonishingly powerful and complex, and a number of contemporary composers draw on this wealth. The importance of music for the survival of the nation cannot be overestimated.
