The magnificent conductor Marie Jacquot presents a French program with the WDR Symphony Orchestra, star violist Antoine Tamestit, and acclaimed organist Iveta Apkalna. Camille Saint-Saëns uniquely combined exquisite classicism with sensitive romanticism. His monumental “Organ Symphony” is his symphonic masterpiece. Richard Wagner’s “Tannhäuser,” as German as it may be, is linked to the composer’s aspiration to achieve success in Paris. Thierry Escaich, the French organ virtuoso, is also internationally successful as a composer. His rich body of work is by no means limited to his instrument. His viola concerto, inspired by a “Night of Songs” of the Navajo people, was written for Antoine Tamestit. Escaich on his music: “There’s quite a lot of lyricism in me. That’s just who I am.”
