Tchaikovsky’s rarely heard, gripping “Symphonic Ballad” about a voivode, based on poems from Polish and Russian national romanticism, is followed by pieces that are particularly close to the heart of Herbert Schuch, whose career once began in Salzburg. A wonderfully melodic and profound Impromptu by Franz Schubert leads into one of the great Romantic piano concertos, that of Robert Schumann, who also created resonant poetry with this work.
