The last work written in the USA by Antonin Dvořák, who died 120 years ago, is one for an instrument that the composer did not like very much at all - "it nuzzles at the top, it hums at the bottom!" Yet he of all people wrote the most famous and grateful of all cello concertos. This wonderful piece is filled with the deep melancholy, but also the passionate joy of life of the Slavic soul. The Prague Symphony Orchestra and its principal conductor Tomáš Brauner are "native speakers" of this music, and Raphaela Gromes from Munich is a "shooting star" on the cello. Leoš Janáček would be 170 years old in 2024 and yet he seems to us to be a composer of the modern age. In fact, most of his major works were written after 1900. Little known is "The Child of the Village Musician", an atmospheric orchestral piece with a magnificent solo for the first violin, which plays the musician. The evening ends with the suite from Janáček's best-known opera, the deeply moving Czech village story "Jenůfa".
