Frenchman Xavier de Maistre is a world-class harpist and, so to speak, the most successful man in a rather feminine domain. The name of the composer Reinhold Glière does not sound particularly Russian, but the son of a Saxon wind instrument maker saw the light of day in Kiev, where his father had married a Ukrainian woman and opened a workshop. The son opted for a national Russian career, also in terms of his style, and died a "People's Artist of the USSR." The atmospheric and very grateful Harp Concerto from 1938 is one of his few works also popular in the West. Glière managed to serve the Soviet regime better than Dmitri Shostakovich, although the great colleague also made it to People's Artist and Stalin Prize winner. All the ambivalence of life between conformity and truthfulness is reflected in Shostakovich's symphonies, arguably the most important symphonic cycle of the modern era. The "Tenth" is a touching monument of (musical) history. That this russian program is played by the Basque National Orchestra, conducted by its music director from the USA, Robert Trevino, proves the boundary-crossing power of great music.
