Richard Strauss - A hero's life?

A lecture by Gottfried Franz Kasparek

The "symphonic poem", also called "tone poem", originated in the Romantic period. In contrast to the mostly "absolute" classical symphony, it tells a story in sounding pictures. Often it has a literary or historical background, sometimes it is a piece of more or less disguised autobiography. Richard Strauss is undoubtedly the hero of his "heroic life". The real, musical and historical background of this successful tone poem is to be created in word, sound and image.
