In the first part of the concert with the brilliant RSO Vienna conducted by the young British maestro Duncan Ward, the celebrated German virtuoso Nils Mönkemeyer will play the Rhapsody Concerto for viola and orchestra created by Bohuslav Martinů in 1952 in the USA, but not entirely without a Bohemian background. He wanted to create a new, lyrically determined romanticism. Before that, there is a tonal earthquake with and for Ludwig van Beethoven. Gerhard E. Winkler, internationally successful composer from Salzburg, wrote his fascinatingly powerful orchestral piece "B-Beben" as a tribute to the Beethoven Year 2020, with love and passion. Among the Beethoven admirers was also Dmitri Schostakowitsch. His 1st Symphony is the incredible stroke of an 18-year-old genius. The piece was actually intended as a thesis to complete his studies at the Leningrad Conservatory. Schostakowitsch was earning his living as a silent fimovie pianist at the time. But not for long, for the youthfully cheeky, inventive piece, already highly original in its explosive mixture of poignancy and lyricism, became a worldwide success within a very short time and established the fame of one of the greatest symphonic composers of the modern era.
