“Composer of the Year” Beethoven and his “Fifth,” the “Symphony of Fate,” form the finale of this cycle. Beethoven, a proponent of the ideals of the French Revolution, speaks here in highly emotional tones that captivate from the very first bar while simultaneously bringing the classical form to its climax. In this and preceding performances, we experience the Basel Symphony Orchestra under the baton of one of the leading conductors of our time, Markus Poschner.
The program opens with Brahms’ “Tragic Overture,” a somber orchestral work, before the world-class Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth performs Joseph Haydn’s seminal Trumpet Concerto, the first piece written for a valved instrument. Could Haydn have imagined a woman performing this piece? He would surely have taken pleasure in it. Afterward, we travel to her homeland to be enchanted by Edvard Grieg’s melodies of the North.
