ISTVÁN VÁRDAI - Cello

Antonín Dvořák’s final symphony was composed in the “New World” and blends the fascination of North America - where the Czech composer was particularly inspired by the songs of Indigenous peoples and African Americans - with Bohemian dance rhythms and a Slavic spirit; a combination that has ensured its enduring global success. This time, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra will perform it under the baton of its young principal conductor, Olari Elts. István Várdai hails from Hungary and is considered one of the most significant cellists of our time. His exquisite Stradivarius cello was once played by Jacqueline du Pré and has, so to speak, experience with one of the greatest cello concertos of the Romantic era, that of Edward Elgar. The program opens, however, with music from Estonia, by Erkki-Sven Tüür, who is also a rock musician and flutist and conjures up a storm - in his language, this is called “Tormiloits.”.
