The Göteborg Opera Orchestra is one of Sweden’s leading ensembles and is making its debut in Salzburg, featuring its principal guest conductor, the young Latvian Aivis Greters, and the internationally acclaimed German violinist Veronika Eberle. The program centers on “the Bruch Concerto” - that is, the popular first of three magnificent violin concertos by the idiosyncratic Romantic composer Max Bruch. Originally written for violin as well, the “Swedish Dances” - modeled after Brahms’s “Hungarian Dances” - are exquisite, folklorically accented gems that Bruch orchestrated himself. After the intermission, the youthful and fresh Symphony No. 1 by Jean Sibelius delights the audience; though often said to be closely related to Tchaikovsky, it already unmistakably speaks the language of the Finnish master in its rhapsodic energy.
