Pure Beethoven

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, D major

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
Symphony No. 4, B major

ORCHESTER WIENER AKADEMIE
MARTIN HASELBÖCK - Conductor
BENJAMIN SCHMID - Violin

It is arguably the violin concerto of all violin concertos, yet it was not particularly celebrated at first. It was only the great violinist Joseph Joachim who, after Beethoven’s death, brought it to worldwide success and made it a cornerstone of the violin repertoire. This time, it is performed by “host” Benjamin Schmid, a worthy successor to Joachim, who continually draws out new facets of this singular work. Together with the Wiener Akademie and its conductor Martin Haselböck, a very special, historically informed approach to this music has emerged over the past few years, for which the artists have already received great international acclaim, both in concert halls and for their CD recording. After the intermission, they turn their attention to a Beethoven symphony that is relatively rarely performed. Beethoven’s “Fourth” is a great work that appears rather cheerful, even playful, finely balanced, almost chamber-like—and yet is full of passion.
