Pure Beethoven

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, D major

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN
Symphony No. 4, B major

ORCHESTER WIENER AKADEMIE
MARTIN HASELBÖCK - Conductor
BENJAMIN SCHMID - Violin

It is arguably the violin concerto of all violin concertos, yet it was not particularly celebrated at first. It was only the great violinist Joseph Joachim who, after Beethoven’s death, brought it to worldwide success and made it a cornerstone of the violin repertoire. This time, it is performed by artistic director Benjamin Schmid, a worthy successor to Joachim, who continually draws out new facets of this singular work. This promises to be exciting, as the Wiener Akademie and its conductor Martin Haselböck are known for a very special, historically informed approach to this music. After the intermission, they will perform a Beethoven symphony that is rarely played. Beethoven’s “Fourth” is a monumental work that strikes a cheerful, even playful tone, finely balanced, almost like chamber music – yet still brimming with passion.
