The Finn Santtu-Matias Rouvali, one of the great conducting personalities of the younger generation, will perform with the world-famous Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, of which he is the principal conductor. With Tchaikovsky's sixth symphony, the "Pathétique", an important work not only of the Russian Romantic period is on the programme. It is the moving swan song of one of the greatest melodists in the history of music, stirring in its honest pathos and deeply moving in its waning swan song. A brilliantly gifted man, who suffered all his life from the lack of understanding of those around him, takes his leave. Tchaikovsky and Brahms knew each other, but they could not become friends. Johannes Brahms' violin concerto never fails to enchant with its emotional diversity, its clear beauty and its mastery of using the solo instrument within the framework of a grand symphonic narrative. Arabella Steinbacher, the celebrated violinist, is this time the narrator, as it were. There may be a story to it, but Brahms did not reveal it and we may think of our own.
