“Composer of the Year” Beethoven and his “Fifth,” the “Fate Symphony,” form the finale of this cycle. Beethoven, a proponent of the ideals of the French Revolution, speaks here in highly emotional tones that captivate from the very first bar while simultaneously bringing the classical form to its climax. In this and the preceding performances, we experience the Basel Symphony Orchestra under the baton of one of the leading conductors of our time, Markus Poschner. We begin by traveling to Norway, where Edvard Grieg delights us with the melodies of the North, before the world-class trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth, a native of that country, performs Joseph Haydn’s seminal Trumpet Concerto—the first piece written for a valved instrument. Could Haydn have imagined a woman performing this piece? He would surely have taken great pleasure in it.
