Erich Wolfgang Korngold, still a child prodigy at the age of fifteen, wrote his first major symphonic work and modestly called it "Sinfonietta", although it lasts more than 40 minutes. Richard Strauss sat enthusiastically next to his young colleague at the Viennese premiere and later conducted the piece in Berlin. With somnambulistic certainty, the youngster had found his own style and the soaring "motive of the merry heart" that accompanied him throughout his life. Before that, the mature work of another famous child prodigy can be experienced, the E minor Violin Concerto by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, a masterpiece of Romanticism. The violinist Dalibor Karvay comes from Slovakia, is first concertmaster of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, which is performing this evening, and is a much sought-after soloist. It is pleasing that women are no longer the exception on the podium. Marie Jacquot from France is the designated music director of the Royal Danish Opera and a young high-flyer. At the beginning of the evening, she will take us to an "Enchanted Lake" by Anatoly Lyadov, who could not only draw with notes.
