"I feel music, I do not invent it", wrote England's great late Romantic composer Edward Elgar. With his "Enigma Variations", which on closer inspection are not at all so enigmatic, he created a masterpiece of subtle orchestral artistry full of beguiling melody, which this time is performed by the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of its new Greek chief conductor Vassilis Christopoulos, who have hardly ever been present in Salzburg before. The concert begins with Arnold Schoenberg's difficult "Five Orchestral Pieces", to mark the 151st birthday of the great "modern classic" from Vienna, so to speak. In between, the American-Chinese pianist Claire Huangci, a real audience favorite, will perform the famous piano concerto for the left hand by Maurice Ravel. Ravel's motto was: "Great music must always comes from the heart."
