Franz Liszt's most famous symphonic poem is "Les Préludes", and not just because it was misused as a victory fanfare in dark times. Moreover, there is nothing German about it at all, but rather a profoundly French poem about life and death. Liszt's first piano concerto is actually also a tone poem in disguise, but it is filled with the composer's legendary pianistic virtuosity. Mariam Batsashvili, a "charm offensive from Georgia" who has been acclaimed worldwide, is a guest at the piano. Conductor Shiyeon Sung is not only a star in her native country South Korea, where she is considered a pioneer. Before 2017, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra was the Royal Orchestra of Flanders and is one of the leading orchestras in multilingual Belgium. "Music can be described as the universal language of mankind" wrote Liszt - and so the finale of the concert features Antonín Dvořák's Bohemian bow to Brahms, his 6th Symphony.
