Musical variations are a joy when they are by masters. Johannes Brahms, for example, enchants us with the artful changes to a "Schlager melody", which he thought was one by Joseph Haydn. The Hungarian late Romantic composer Ernst von Dohnányi dedicated his Kinderlied Variations to the "pleasure of humorous people" and the "annoyance of others". You will certainly know the melody used and star pianist Isata Kenneth-Mason has certainly already played it as a soloist. There is also a set of variations in Ludwig van Beethoven's "Fifth". It is unsurpassed in terms of drama, carried by revolutionary ideas, blessed with grandiose motifs and one of the absolute highlights of "Viennese Classicism". One of the leading orchestras in the Netherlands, the one from Den Haag, is led by the successful young German conductor Ruth Reinhardt, who will make her debut in Salzburg with this program. And Wolfgang Amadé will also be making an appearance on this evening - let yourself be surprised.
